ARE YOU BEING GREENWASHED?

Circular Online wants to know how committed big manufacturers are to reducing waste.

“From fashion companies to food and drink, and from airlines to car manufacturers,” states the article A darker shade of green, “appealing to consumers who care about the environment by claiming products are more eco-friendly than they actually are is rife.”

Claims about product packaging being compostable, biodegradable and plastic-free are, sadly, often misleading claims one industry observer.

For example, some compostable polymers are made from fossil fuels and most biodegradable polymers only biodegrade in industrial composting facilities – not in your garden compost heap.

Terms such as “recyclable” and “100 per cent recyclable” for plastic packaging can also be misleading, as manufacturers happily quote theoretical material properties and ignore the reality of day-to-day waste management.
