A deposit return scheme (DRS) for plastic bottles and drink cans is to be introduced by the UK government.
Covering England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the scheme is scheduled to be introduced in 2025 (Scotland already has its own DRS).
It is anticipated that the initiative will cut the amount of drinks container litter by up to 85%.
The scheme will see the introduction of both reverse vending machines and designated return points where people can exchange their bottles for cash.
The amount that people will get per bottle or can will be set by a Deposit Management Organisation, which will be established to run the scheme.
