CREATING PLASTIC ALTERNATIVES

Magnified bacteria.

From a spray-on coating to bacteria-based packaging, companies around the world are developing alternatives to single-use plastic.

An edible, tasteless and invisible plant-based spray for fruits and vegetables has been created by California company Apeel and is being used on cucumbers and avocados sold at Walmart and other supermarkets, while Notpla of London is producing compostable packaging from seaweed, which takes just weeks to break down.

These and other innovations are profiled in The Guardian: It comes from bacteria, and goes back to bacteria: the future of plastic alternatives.
