A deposit system for plastic bags is helping increase recycling and reduce litter.

The brainchild of Swedish company Bower (previously PantaPå) the system uses a phone app to let people claim a reward when they return bags to participating recycling points.

Bower claims to have over 300,000 recyclers involved and to have recycled more than 20 million items of packaging, saving an estimated one million kilos of CO2.

Although it’s apparently not available in the UK, the app also works with other types of packaging, including milk cartons and metal cans.
